Governance by deception, arrogance and at times rank dishonesty is being practised by government and opposition. However, the constitution commission proposes little to allow people to intervene in their affairs. Here are a few recent examples.
Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar announces her government's acceptance of a 24 per cent pay increase recommended by the Salaries Review Commission. However, as a means of diverting attention away from the fact of this significant increase in salaries and benefits dated back to 2011, the PM says the Cabinet has rejected the "significantly higher levels of pay increases" proposed by the House Committee.
She then engages in a song and dance about the constitutionality of the SRC to make the recommendations. The obvious question would then be, why did the PM bother to establish the House Committee, chaired by her deputy and leader of government business in the House with the majority members from her government, to look over the shoulder of the statutory body that is the SRC?
