Grenada Days 9
For Trinidadian girls of the working class–and increasingly, of any class–wining is both performative and normative. In my day we sang, "Brown girl in the ring...show me your motion," complete with an instruction to "go down" and "come up."Trinidadian boys face no such indoctrination. There are no expectations about their wining. Most of them grow up to be men who wine adequately but not spectacularly. Wining in Trinidad is a woman's art.God alone knows what has taken the place of the ring game in these times of young girls twerking in their bedrooms for YouTube videos, but I guarantee that something has taken its place. Somewhere, even while you read this, there's a little girl being teased for not being able to perform a good wine, and being taught how by her more skilled peers.
