The incident with Bunji and his band was completely avoidable and suggests a breakdown in communication. These are all strong indicators that the Division of Tourism and Transportation of the Tobago House of Assembly (THA), which spent so much time and money to attract thousands of patrons to the festival, did not put as much focus on the logistics of the event.
The quality of the musical fare at the concerts which climaxed this year's Tobago Jazz Experience has been overshadowed by two negative incidents–severe traffic congestion getting to and from Friday night's main show featuring John Legend and the last-minute decision by Bunji Garlin and his band to pull out from performing at that show. Both incidents suggest a massive failure of event planning and management for the festival which has been a major annual attraction in Tobago for close to a decade.
To preserve the image of this event which features high-calibre international, regional and local artistes from several musical genres, organisers must move to ramp up their planning and marketing from now. If there is even a hint of the types of incidents that marred this year's edition, there will be very little chance of building the Tobago Jazz Experience into a mega musical event with even more major international artistes and bigger crowds, as promised by the organisers.
