It's a three-way dead heat for "Most Significant Event of Last Week" between the NGC Bocas Literary Festival, the Facebook video of the woman beating her 12-year-old daughter with a belt 63 times in six minutes and the revelation of several lawyers in Trinidad being paid several million dollars (each) which emerged from the back-and-forth between the ex-Solicitor General and the not-yet-ex-Attorney General (in which, according to your political orientation, either the ex-SG or the soon-to-be-ex-AG made startling revelations that destroy the career, legitimacy, credibility, or all three, of the other one).In other words, a quiet week for Trinidad.
What, though, is a conscientious commentator to do? Focus on only one set of bobol? Accentuate the positive and ignore the negative and be accused of political bias? All wheels this squeaky deserve grease (the politicians perhaps more than just a greasing). To satisfy both the urge to praise writers recognised by the lit fest and the one to put some licks on the parties deserving same (ie: everybody else), I propose to avoid omitting anyone by combining everybody. I will take what should remain the central talking point in any society wishing to triumph over its violent past (ie, the mother dutifully beating her child mercilessly on Facebook) and work the other actors into the drama.
