"In T&T today, we are silently watching our state institutions such as the police and judiciary collapse."We are witnessing a paralysis in governance."We are in a situation in which there is a virtual breakdown of law and order with the result of general banditry and chaos."Between our security lapses and our record on poverty, we are a failing state, indeed one vulnerable in the extreme and on the verge of failure."
Dr Bhoe Tewarie,
Saturday, July 30, 2005
The murder last weekend of Dana Seetahal, senior counsel, told a lot about us. If T&T was on the verge of failure when Dr Tewarie uttered those words almost nine years ago, after last weekend's events which saw the well-known (and given the reaction to her death, certainly well-loved) Seetahal gunned down on her way home, then we have certainly reached.
Despite the several leaks to the media about the identity of the shooter or shooters; using sophisticated military-issued arms and ammunition or simply a hand-gun; driving a panel van or station wagon–regardless of which story you believe, I have absolutely no confidence that Seetahal's killers will be brought to justice.
