Last week, the T&T Guardian delved into the issue of life on the streets for teenagers who engage in prostitution to make a living for themselves or their families. Reporter Camille Clarke spent several nights monitoring street life in Woodbrook and around Independence Square, where she was able to highlight for readers the soft underbelly of the social dislocation that exists in many areas of society.
Her four-part series, which ran from Sunday to Wednesday, has attracted the attention of the authorities and hopefully the T&T Guardian has contributed to some kind of policy response to this troubling problem.
By contrast with the Point Fortin mother who made the news a few weeks ago for the manner in which she sought to discipline her daughter for posting pictures of herself on Facebook, Clarke unearthed stories of mothers who encourage their teenage daughters to engage in sexual activities for money in order to earn the proceeds for themselves. While this may not appear to be anything new, the fact that it remains an ongoing phenomenon can help us to understand the collapse of family values in some areas of society.
