On August 26, 2013, Dr Wesley Debideen was driving through Grand Bazaar when an assassin blocked the prominent attorney's car, then fired seven shots that killed Debideen. It happened at 3.45 in the afternoon, in the full glare of frightened shoppers.
It was neither a random act nor the first such killing. Others include: Dr Chandra Narayansingh, shot dead as she left work on June 29, 1994; Selwyn Richardson, who served as attorney general first in the PNM and later in the NAR administration, assassinated at his home on June 20, 1995; Hansraj Sumairsingh, chairman of the Mayaro/Rio Claro Regional Corporation, killed by assassins in Mayaro on December 31, 1999.
On May 4, 2014–just two weeks ago–Dana Seetahal became another victim of assassins. As the nation expressed shock and horror, Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar condemned "this outrageous act of brutality" and said it cannot be concluded "by mere expressions of regret and sympathy" as she ordered the police to employ all its resources to solve the murder.
