We are all at risk from the next killers, and it is disingenuous of the Government to imply that had it gotten support from the Opposition and independent senators to give soldiers powers of arrest then the murder rate would not have increased. It is such distortions of the truth that have the country mired in evil.
Instead of blaming others, why didn't the Government change the protracted procedure for recruiting a commissioner of police, and why didn't the Security Council implement a reconstruction of the compromised Police Service. There is no question that effective policing is the only sustainable answer to crime. The unprecedented soldiers' bill did not just give soldiers powers of arrest, but carte blanche police powers to even pursue fowl and mango tief with no independent system of checks and balances.
Sometimes it is difficult not get a sense of foreboding for the country, not because of another child's brutal death, but because of governments' dishonesty and unwillingness to deal with priorities early in their terms of office instead of placing emphasis on paying back campaign financiers with high margin projects. Priorities like establishing viable support systems for parents and children do not provide bankable assets for pipers and their paymasters.
