Is there hope for a genuine multi-ethnic, multi-cultural party to arise to assist with the fashioning of the plural society of T&T into a democracy in which equity and respect, one group for the other, will predominate? The need for such a party to evolve is no more desperate than in the present circumstances in which the tribal, racially-based United National Congress and the People's National Movement are leading the society to perdition.
Even in our little tribal dens we should all hope for such a party or party of parties to emerge. If not, as analysed by this series of columns on the need for balanced social development, open conflict of the kind that has arisen in other multi-ethnic societies, which have not found the formula for peaceful and prosperous co-existence, could implode in violence and toss the society into a permanent state of turmoil.
Having shown in previous columns that the coalitions have not been able to hold together in the face of competition for resources, and the arrogance and ignorance of tribal politicians unable to govern in the interest of the entire society with each one wanting to exercise cultural domination over the other, there must be some political, economic and social formulae which must be developed to facilitate transformation.
