Last Sunday morning I was driving in the westbound lane of the Churchill Roosevelt Highway, perhaps 100 metres from the interchange, when I met a bottleneck. As everyone slowed to a crawl to take a good gape, at the side of the road there were some smashed vehicles and the body of a man lying on the shoulder. There were some showers earlier that morning and the ground was still wet.
After having passed that accident scene, mere metres down the highway, at the turnoff for El Socorro South a station wagon had only moments before slammed into a concrete divider. The front of the vehicle was substantially crumpled and the radiator was hissing and venting steam furiously. The tint on the windows was so dark it was impossible to determine the condition of the driver.
Approximately an hour later, I had cause to pass near to the scene of the very first accident, which appeared to yield at least one fatality. Incredibly, a fire tender and an ambulance were attending the scene of yet another collision in the very same spot! In this case there was another body lying on the now dry asphalt.
