Last week at this time I expected I'd start my exploration of the finest roti in the land in this week's column, but life intervened and presented something too good to pass up. I crave your indulgence for another week before I start my adventures in Trinidad roti. What life presented was this: almost 100 pieces of advice to young people, given to me by a mixed bag of people via the Internet.
Last week I posted on Facebook the following status: If you had to talk to 300 young people, what would you tell them? I was trying an experiment in crowd-sourcing ideas for a graduation speech I had been asked to give at a San Juan school today. The results of the experiment overwhelmed me.Nearly 100 of my Facebook friends responded, from the UK and the US, the Caribbean, Latin America and Asia, in poetic, pithy, cynical, or whimsical comments. From chutney artist Neeshan D Hitman, to black beauty blogger Patrice Grell Yursik, to Midwestern US research scientist Kenneth Moon. They were writers, teachers, thespians, librarians, musicians, activists; young, middle aged, older, of various creeds and races.
