Two men are to appear in court on Monday charged with trafficking cocaine and marijuana which police said carried an estimated street value of $22.5 million. In a separate incident, two other men were held with an illegal shotgun and three cartridges by the same group of police.
According to the head of the division, Snr Supt Afzal Khan, officers led by Sgt Nigel Horsford included PCs Pierre, Maynard, Joseph and Nurse, stopped a car around 4.30 am on Thursday along the North Coast Road. Two men, aged 35 and 39, from Longdenville, Chaguanas, and La Seiva, Maraval, were arrested after the illegal drugs were found in the back seat of the car, concealed in crocus bags. Police did not disclose the weight of the drugs seized.
Khan told the media that one of the cocaine packages had the number 94 written on it.Asked about the way the drugs were being transported, Horsford said it was nothing strange for people to have crocus bags on the back seats of their cars in the North Coast area as many people who lived there were farmers.Police said they plan to increase patrols in the area to curb the importation of drugs.
Horsford, who was highly commended by Khan, also led a party of police who arrested two Maraval men almost 15 hours later. Horsford and his team saw the men in a car on Saddle Road, Maraval. They claimed to have been experiencing engine trouble, but when police realised the engine was cold, they became suspicious and found the shotgun and cartridges hidden in the car.
