One day after his face was shown on TV6's Beyond the Tape as a wanted fugitive, suspended police constable Christopher Madeira, 31, committed suicide.According to police reports, Madeira, of California, drank a poisonous substance at a bar yesterday morning in Chase Village, Chaguanas.Madeira had been suspended from duty after he was arrested in Tobago for allegedly renting out his service weapon. He was due to appear in court on Friday.
In a telephone interview yesterday, co-host of the television programme and vice president of the Police Social and Welfare Association, Insp Roger Alexander, said the officer was wanted in connection with two charges of misbehaviour in public office and failing to appear in court.Alexander said Madeira had been on the run for the past two years after being charged with the offence in Scarborough two years ago. Madeira was charged by Supt Garfield Moore of the Tobago Division.
