As many of his teammates of the period have testified, Joey was a deep and analytical thinker of the game and a demanding taskmaster. It was said that he hated being in the field and therefore conceived of every way possible to end the innings of his opponents. Joey also had the distinction of being personally selected as a young blossoming talent by the late great Sir Frank Worrell to tour with the WI team of 1963. That Joey's initial tour to England proved that he had the talent but perhaps not yet the discipline to play long innings against the top fast bowlers is an undeniable fact. However, he proved on the 1968 tour of Australia and New Zealand that he had matured to be a consistent Test batsman. And as significant and overpowering as his contribution to cricket was, it should not be forgotten that Joey was also a quite competent football player, playing for Fatima College and later on the great Maple football club. In this respect, Joey was typical of generations of sportsmen who played in the sport of the season. Michael Joey Carew, we salute you and say thanks to your family for allowing you to share your talents with the rest of the world.
