Hopefully the short, tragic life of one-year-old Jacob Munroe, murdered on the day that the world observed Universal Children's Day, will give impetus to long-delayed plans to fully implement and strengthen policies and programmes to provide a safe, nurturing environment for T&T's children.
T&T, as a signatory to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, is supposed to ensure that all conditions are in place to protect the basic human rights of this nation's children–the right to survival; to develop to the fullest; to protection from harmful influences, abuse and exploitation; and to participate fully in family, cultural and social life. The truth is, however, that large numbers of children are routinely denied these rights by the very people who should be protecting them.
There are many, many more Jacob Munroes. They are the most vulnerable and innocent citizens of this country, who are denied their rights to a loving enabling, environment and robbed of the safety, comfort and support they need to learn and grow.
