As the nation gets ready for the launch of a new round of political campaigns next month, the reality of political parties adopting one-person, one-vote methodologies will sink in and create an atmosphere resembling a general election.Having come through a year of four elections in 2013, the revelation by Guardian senior reporter Gail Alexander yesterday that the challenger to Dr Keith Rowley for the leadership of the PNM will be made known to the public on January 8 tells us that another campaign is here sooner than we think.
In her report, Alexander quotes Dr Bose Sharma of the group To Preserve the Balisier (TPTB). The essence of the campaign that is to be launched by TPTB against Dr Rowley can be gleaned from a statement made by Sharma to Alexander in which he says: "The PNM cannot depend on its usual constituents to return to power."
This would suggest that a very interesting campaign is about to be launched for control of the PNM. Meanwhile, over at the UNC, Alexander said in her column yesterday that the party "has been abuzz with undercurrents, since in November a challenger to Persad-Bissessar could arise, testing her strength."
