The disaster that struck St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines and Dominica on Christmas Eve offers a clear warning to local authorities about the potential for damage and loss of life that weather can wreak on any Caribbean island.St Vincent's Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves said the damage done would call for hundreds of millions of dollars and years of work to rebuild. It was, he said, "a disaster of a proportion the likes of which we have not seen in living memory."
St Lucia will also need hundreds of millions according to the first estimates of Prime Minister Dr Kenny Anthony, and the country is still recovering from Hurricane Tomas in 2010, which killed 14 people on the island and caused extensive damage.Dominica is the only one of the three islands which has not requested an intervention from this country though there's no question that this country will continue to monitor the situation in Dominica and act should it call for aid.
The powerful weather system that caused all this destruction in the region is believed to have claimed 14 lives along with all of the costly damage left in its wake.Trinidad and Tobago has made decisive moves in response to this disaster and moved quickly to bring aid and comfort to our neighbours in St Lucia and St Vincent and the Grenadines.
