The return of former prime minister Patrick Manning to the House of Representatives yesterday was a significant development in the politics of the country.Despite having suffered a stroke two years ago this month, Manning has gone through significant recuperation and rehabilitation to be able to return to Parliament.
Naturally, there was an emotional side to his return, with jerseys, placards and supporters being specially arranged for the event. Inside the Parliament, he made a ceremonial return to his seat and was welcomed by the Speaker and all sides of the House. The reality behind all of this is that Manning has returned just at the moment when the date is about to be announced for the internal elections in the PNM that will be contested on a one-person, one-vote basis.
Manning has been able to hold on to his seat by virtue of the Speaker granting his applications for leave on the basis of medical certificates verifying his illness. The San Fernando East seat is a prized possession in the armoury of the PNM and Manning has already stated publicly that he will be stepping down when this Parliament is dissolved.
