Karl Hudson-Phillips, QC, was a legal luminary of international standing and a politician who in the end transcended politics. An active practitioner and outstanding legal scholar to the end, Mr Hudson-Phillips willingly provided his considerable expertise and experience on a range of issues of national importance. When he spoke the nation listened. He was an elder statesman and his enduring stature is evident from the range and number of those who will genuinely mourn him and miss his counsel.
Karl Hudson-Phillips, QC, was a legal luminary of international standing and a politician who in the end transcended politics, in the company of a very few others of equal distinction, such as Tajmool Hosein and Sir Ellis Clarke.An outstanding and formidable advocate whose career spanned more than 50 years, Mr Hudson-Phillips began to make his mark shortly after being called to the bar at Gray's Inn, London, in 1959. In a little over a decade, after establishing a distinguished law practice in Port-of-Spain, he was appointed a Queen's Counsel in 1970.
By then Mr Hudson-Phillips was also making his mark in politics, serving as an MP from 1966 under the leadership of People's National Movement (PNM) founder Dr Eric Williams. Between 1969 and 1973 he was Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs and oversaw the implementation of significant legislative reform in the areas of criminal, labour and civil law. He was also associated with the infamous Public Order Act which was developed in response to the Black Power riots and army mutiny of 1970.
