Last Wednesday, the Guardian reported that Opposition Leader Dr Keith Rowley told a meeting at the Arima Town Hall on Monday night that he became leader of the PNM "by accident."Essentially, Rowley was recalling how he had planned to leave active politics at the end of the last parliamentary term because he was "becoming disenchanted."
The last parliamentary term was terminated by an early dissolution in April 2010 instead of December 2012. That was a political game-changer as it effectively saw the demise of the Manning administration which led to the resignation of former prime minister Patrick Manning as political leader of the PNM ahead of time.
Rowley was chosen as interim political leader before he was confirmed as political leader at a subsequent convention. In many respects, this would constitute the "accident" of history in PNM politics by which Rowley came to lead the party.
