The "silliness of the season" comment by Senior Counsel Martin Daly most adequately captured the controversy surrounding the reappointment of Justice Sebastian Ventour as deputy chairman of the Integrity Commission just three weeks after he resigned from the post. Mr Daly, a former president of the Law Association, is clearly at odds with the current Law Association president, Seenath Jairam, SC.
Justice Ventour was reappointed notwithstanding the possibility of a public outcry over the issue, which was foreshadowed by the concern earlier this month over his reappointment as a judge for a day.Perhaps that would explain the timing of his reappointment to the commission, done as it was on Carnival Thursday, when the psyche of the nation enters a period of hedonism and serious matters fall to the back of the queue for national attention. In some respects, this has turned into a real "ole mas."
Despite the revelry of the season, there are serious questions that the President must answer. These would be:Did Justice Ventour disclose to him last year that he had outstanding judgments to deliver and that he would have to resign as deputy chairman of the commission in order to deliver them?
