It took 24 years almost a quarter of a century and a year for each person killed–but there now exists a comprehensive collection of testimony and background information connected to the 1990 coup attempt in T&T.A thoughtful observer might be inclined to consider George Santayana's famous quote: "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."
Until now, the history of that infamous event, which placed the T&T Guardian at the heart of an insurrection in progress, has been only accessible as a series of news reports and fragmented, largely unrecorded recollections. In the absence of a full and thorough accounting of the coup attempt, an enormous vacuum has been filled with misinformation, rumour and in some quarters, the unfortunate lionisation of a terrorist effort to overthrow the elected government of T&T.
There have been books about the incident, but until now there has been nothing on this scale, a 13,000-page collection of all available information and testimony offered on the matter, the result of a lengthy commission of enquiry led by Sir David Simmons. The 1,324-page summary report was presented to President Anthony Carmona on Thursday and laid in Parliament on Friday.
