It has been overshadowed in recent weeks by the spiralling murder toll, but the high road-fatality figure also continues to be cause of major concern. The latest victims include two teenagers–Vishal Maharaj, 18, and Sunil Mahadeo, 19–who were in the tray of a Toyota Hilux van when it went out of control, and 12-year-old Kadaisha Edwards who was knocked down and killed on Thursday night as she crossed the Priority Bus Route in Laventille.
While official data shows a small decrease in the number of fatal road crashes, the toll remains unacceptably high. As the latest accidents highlight in a very tragic way, many road users are losing their lives because laws are broken and people take dangerous chances, often in a quest to get from one point to another in the fastest time possible.
