While this agency has remained largely under the radar, it has gained a reputation as an accessible, responsive state enterprise meeting real needs through interventions. Because the National Commission for Self Help Limited (NCSHL) does not have a very high profile it may be under-resourced. On the positive side, however, that means it has also escaped being politicised and has been able to continue its mission undisturbed.
This is one state agency that truly embodies the adage about teaching someone to fish rather than simply giving them the fish. That makes the NCSHL an excellent antidote to the welfare mentality which hinders so many in this country.Recently the head of the NCSHL has been urging corporate citizens to assist in its work since like many state agencies it doesn't have the resources it needs.Supporting an effort like this would fit in perfectly with the CSR plans of many companies so hopefully some of them will respond.
Established by Cabinet on April 7, 1987, and registered as a state-owned company on April 14, 1997, the NCSHL uses the self-help approach to encourage communities and individuals to rely on the resources available to them and take charge of their lives. From an annual budget of approximately $40 million, it provides grants to needy citizens, including the Minor Repairs and Reconstruction Grants ($10,000).
