Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar's suggestion that corporal punishment should be banned in homes has added another dimension to the contentious and emotional national debate that has been raging since a video of a mother beating her 12-year-old daughter went viral a few days ago. However, putting such a law into effect is hardly a priority compared to the other pressing issue highlighted by this controversy, which is the lack of support services for families in crisis.
In the rush to condemn or praise the mother and daughter at the centre of this issue, most have skirted around the glaring lack of counselling and support for this family. And it is not as though this is an isolated incident.
