There must be something terribly wrong with a society and culture in which there is an allegation every Monday morning about corruption in high places, and yet over the decades, the successful investigation and prosecution of criminal activities have been very, very few in relation to these damaging claims.Today the procession of allegations runs thick and wide, and before one can be properly assessed another takes its place.
Successive governments have come into office by dint of claims of deep corruption in the governments that preceded them. There remain allegations against the government of Basdeo Panday going back to 1995-2001, the period when his United National Congress administration was in office. Among them were charges brought against Prime Minister Panday himself; that matter floundered in the court, having taken an eternity to snail its way through the system.
Alongside those allegations are a few cases of fraud amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars; those cases remain in the system and seem not to go anywhere.Irritatingly, the infamous Section 34 fiasco even opened the possibility for such cases to be dismissed. The infamous alleged corrupt activities of Calder Hart as chairman/CEO of the Urban Development Corporation are also seemingly on the way to never being resolved in a manner that could be convincing to the population.
