Whatever the failures and shortcomings of his political career, no one can deny that Arthur NR Robinson gave his life to service to his country, and has been almost universally commended for his courage at the darkest hour of the 1990 coup attempt.During his remarkable 87-year journey from the tiny Tobago fishing village of Castara to this country's highest office, Mr Robinson left his indelible mark on the island of his birth, as well as nationally, regionally and internationally. It was no surprise then that people from all walks of life have been taking the time throughout the last few days of state funeral activities to pay tribute to the man who has held three of the most important political offices in this country.
The depth of respect and gratitude felt by many was perfectly represented by 91-year-old Sheila Sandy, who travelled from Tunapuna to the Parliament building where Mr Robinson's body lay in state for two days because she felt she had to mark the moment.Others have expressed their feelings on the former leader's passing with the tears they shed as they filed past his coffin, prayers offered and other heartfelt gestures.Leaders have come from many parts of the world to pay their final respects.Among them was the president of the International Criminal Court (ICC), the global institution Mr Robinson played a key role in establishing, Sang-Hyun Song.
