On Wednesday, Oropouche West Member of Parliament Stacy Roopnarine told the media, while on a schools tour in her constituency, that there was an urgent need for Internet education for students. This followed the announcement by Minister of Education Dr Tim Gopeesingh that he had called for "a mechanism" to monitor the increased postings of vulgar and violent incidents between students in the classrooms of T&T.
It's unclear that such technology even exists. Facebook is noticeably unwilling to intervene in the postings of its users, taking action only after complaints are made and is extremely unlikely to take up the challenge of monitoring postings of videos from T&T.Both members of Cabinet were responding, apparently reflexively, to a recent video posted to Facebook which appeared to show two boys taking turns having sex with a girl in a classroom.
There is certainly cause for concern over the regularity of the posting of these recordings of outrageous behaviour to social media.
