The assassin's bullets that silenced Dana Seetahal, SC, on Sunday morning did not only take the life of one of T&T's most outstanding jurists, but were a vicious assault on law and order.
That is why it so urgently requires strong and decisive action if the nation's sense of safety and security, which has been steadily eroding for so long, is to be restored. The brutal attack on this prominent and successful special state prosecutor is all the more alarming because, in every likelihood, it was not a random crime but a carefully planned execution–and thus a deliberate strike against the rule of law, so crucial for the country's stability, which Ms Seetahal upheld throughout her illustrious legal career.
Controversial at times, Ms Seetahal's views on matters of justice and social order were well known. That is because, until her life was so cruelly cut short, this outstanding scholar, lecturer, writer, prominent attorney-at-law and former Independent Senator never hesitated to share her opinions. She was a woman of excellence who, in her chosen career path, set out to make a positive difference from the moment she gained her first tertiary qualification, a bachelor of law degree from the University of the West Indies. She later added a masters degree in criminology and a Fulbright scholarship to her numerous academic achievements, all the while rising through the ranks in the legal profession as a state prosecutor, assistant solicitor general and a magistrate.
