At a time when the Police Service finds itself on the skeptical end of public opinion following the brutal killing of Dana Seetahal, there is a ray of hope in how our country can handle violent crime to restore confidence.Today, the Sunday Guardian profiles Ag Senior Superintendent Johnnie Abraham who is responsible for the Central Division. Senior Reporter Yvonne Baboolal, who is now based at the T&T Guardian's new Central Bureau, has provided an insight into who is Johnnie Abraham and what makes him tick.
Based on the crime statistics for the Central Division, it is clearly apparent that fighting back the criminal element in our society can be done. However, a lot of that depends upon the leadership that is applied in that fight against crime. For a man who came from humble beginnings and limited education, he has risen against the odds to become a fearless crime fighter who has turned around the criminal profile of the Central Division.
His approach is driven by being in the field and less in the office, and the morale of the men and women under his direction is high.He has not become a folk hero. He is less concerned about earning so-called "brownie points" for himself and more concerned about pushing back the criminal element.By virtue of his persistent and unrelenting combat-style outlook, he has dramatically reduced violent crime in his division if one were to go inside the numbers for 2012, 2013 and 2014 to date.
