Mr Ramadhar must regain political traction among disaffected members of the party, as well as the wider national electorate and demonstrate that he and other senior party officials have not abandoned their support base in preference for ministerial office. In his victory speech on Sunday night, Mr Ramadhar said the party will return to its street-talk public forum and strengthen its position in the coalition.
Even as congratulations pour in to Prakash Ramadhar on his re-election as leader of the Congress of the People (COP), he should be keenly aware of the daunting task ahead of him.
While, in contrast to the campaigns run by other parties, the COP's was less frantic, low-key and did not feature as much of the mudslinging as the others, Mr Ramadhar and his leadership team must now tackle several troubling issues that have been hovering over the party for several months. In his second term at the helm of the party, his handling of issues will be key to the COP's political survival and the strengthening of its position within the People's Partnership coalition.
