At this week's post-Cabinet media briefing, the Prime Minister spoke about discounts on foodstuffs being given to commemorate Eid and Emancipation, and two ministers spoke about matters that fell under their portfolios. Their substantive statements, however, were overshadowed by the unfortunate obiter dicta that fell from the lips of the official who chairs the media conferences.
Mr Dennis McComie, the director of information and communications in the Office of the Prime Minister, told the media there would be no questions to the PM, but invited them to pose questions to Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Dookeran and Health Minister Dr Fuad Khan.
Fair enough. But Mr McComie then took it upon himself to add that it was the ministers' prerogative "to decide if they are not going to respond if you ask silly questions." Not content with this gaffe, he then warned the media that if they did not "behave" themselves at these media conferences, "We will stop giving you food."In so doing, Mr McComie, through his apparent attempt to censor the news, himself became the news.
