It was an extremely rainy night in Sangre Grande, to end what was supposed to be the biggest event to hit that side of the island. Last month members of the Sangre Grande Regional Carnival Committee (SGRCC) launched GrandeFest, a festival that sought to honour cultural icons.
Heavy rains at the Unit Trust car park did not stop partygoers from showing their love for the local acts.
Although advertised to perform, Roy Cape All Stars and chutney soca band Karma were no-shows, but those who attended didn't seem to be disappointed about the reduction in performances. Prophet Benjamin opened the show with a crowd-pleasing set that had most begging for more.
Even when the rains came and had everyone scampering for shelter, fans could still be heard shouting approval of the Rastafarian's music. Squeezy Rankin, as usual, gave a dynamic performance, as did the Sangre Grande based group, 3 Suns, who ended the show. Despite a few violent incidents during the J'Ouvert festivities on the following morning, the local showcase of soca and reggae acts the night before certainly made amends.
