MY STORY OF CALYPSO
(Devon Matthews)
Calypso start before I born
So I can't say how it start
All I could say is what went on
From what I know in my heart
I remember how long ago
I began to recognise
Bards like Kitchener and Sparrow
As heroes in disguise
When I heard them on the radio
I would turn up the volume
And the strains of sweet calypso
Would vibrate inside my room
CHORUS
I used to long for carnival
To hear the new calypsoes
As the world's greatest bacchanal
The air was filled with echoes
From calypsonians like Spoiler
The young Killer and Christo
Lord Melody and Yul Bryner
From town to San Fernando
The streets would vibrate with tempo
And everyone would leggo
So I want the whole world to know
That is my story of calypso
Lean on Me T&T
(Dr Will B)
How yah never change yah name Mr Bannister
This woman enquiring after the seminar
You say yah is ah product of Black Power Movement Seventy
But most of the leaders then have different names today
Brother Makandal Daaga
He was once Granger
Khafra Kambon you know
Used to be Dave Dabeau
Ah say ah bannister too important to throw away
Too much people depend on it for their safety
Both night and the day
Chorus
Because yah could lean, lean, lean, lean, lean, just lean on me
Ah bannister is a necessity
Everybody, lean, lean, lean lean, just lean on me
Yah tired and sleepy now from a party, lean on me
When yah moving up, hold on, to get to the top, hold on
When yah coming down, hold on, I will keep you strong safe and sound
You can scrape me, sandpaper me, but just paint me red, white and black
I am yah bannister protecting yah back
Yah now come from church or yah come from jail
I will be your supporting hand rail
Everybody need somebody so lean on me T&T
