She is your all round sweet Caribbean girl. He makes the girls weak in the knees when he speaks with his rich, clear, crisp and persuasive baritone voice. Together, they make musical magic. So strong, the chemistry between Antiguan soca artiste, “Tizzy” (Tanzania Sebastian), and 96.1WE FM DJ, Richard Trumpet, that it has sparked rumours that the pair does not only have on stage fire, but off stage as well.

However, they both dismissed this during an interview with the T&T Guardian, saying it was just another case of people believing that a girl and a guy can’t have a platonic relationship. “I doh even know where this came from,” said a smiling Trumpet. “We just have good chemistry and we’ve known each other for a while. We both love music, and so we just decided to take that chemistry we have to song. That’s really all there is to it,” added Tizzy.

Back at it again
When Trumpet teamed up with the gorgeous big-haired belle in 2009, singing the infectious groovy soca hit—Wuk Meh, many thought the former accountant was just another DJ turned soca artiste. But the handsome twenty—maybe thirty-something-year-old, Laventille resident, dispelled this notion. “Contrary to popular belief, I sang before I became a radio announcer. I used to sing with the Asylum band, formerly known as Sensation. Announcing was just another avenue I wanted to explore as an entertainer,” he said. With positive reviews following the collaboration, the duo is back at it again with their C2K11 offering—On De Road, written by Zamba of ELA KRU and Trumpet. “Doing another song together wasn’t so much an initiative on our part. People just really dug Wuk Meh, and everybody was asking why don’t we do something together again, so we did,” Trumpet explained.

Hope for the season

Admitting the song was released a bit late for the season, Trumpet and Sebastian confirmed they were not taking part in this year’s Soca Monarch competition. “We have not entered Soca Monarch this year but it’s all good. “The song was released a bit late, but surprisingly it has gotten an overwhelming response and we are just enjoying the season,” he revealed.

Good music
Trumpet, who is also in the process of completing his first album, which he said would be a mix of  soca R&B, and dancehall, commented on the quality of music released for Carnival 2011. “I think this year artistes have really done their homework. The quality of the songs are much higher than last year, so it is a very competitive atmosphere this year as well.”

Not a hustle ‘ting’
He also took the time to appeal to artistes, the need for more togetherness in the industry. “If I could get into the psyche of all the successful artistes, I would let them know that strong pieces can never be stronger than a strong whole. “Everyone is focusing on competing, and no one is thinking about coming together to create that breakthrough in soca music we are working so hard for. The Jamaican artistes understand this. They compete, but they also know how to sell the music together. That’s why the world knows the sound of Jamaica. “We need to start thinking how we could penetrate the world with soca music and stop this hustle mentality for just three months, because really that’s all it is,” Trumpet declared.
