Carnival 2011
A masquerader at Rio Carnival.

DirecTV will be treating customers to a free preview of their premium international channel; channel 776, TV Globo International, from tomorrow to March 5. This free preview will give them the opportunity to compare Rio Carnival and Trinidad Carnival, both arguably battling the title of “best carnival in the world.”
The parades in Sao Paulo will take place on March 4-5. Wouldn’t it be great if we could be there to experience one of the world’s best Carnivals? Well DirecTV intends making you feel like you’re there with its exclusive coverage and superior on screen technology. With DirecTV’s free preview subscribers will get to experience the highlight of Rio Carnival which is called the Samba Parade or Samba Schools Parade, as the Samba Schools are vital elements of their carnival.

Viewers can catch the opening ceremony from 2 pm on Friday when the Carnival King is crowned by the city mayor and receives the city’s keys. From 8 pm, they can enjoy the Children’s Samba Schools Parade. From 10.30 am to 5 pm on Saturday, tune in for the parade of street bands and the highlight; the Samba Schools Parade starts at 11 pm. Whereas we celebrate a “season” in T&T and it contributes to the definition of our culture, Brazil’s carnival is its culture. The Samba Schools are social clubs representing a particular neighbourhood, usually a working class community of the slums. They have to pick themes, write music and lyrics, make costumes and floats and practice all year round to succeed in the parade.

The Samba Schools entertain the community through samba nights and create a pageant for the parade. They have a samba hall to entertain and practice their samba, and a separate production unit to make their costumes and floats for the Rio Carnival Parade. Almost all of the music played during Rio Carnival is Samba. TV Globo is a general entertainment channel with excellent programming content.
Majority of its production is done in Brazil and is a favourite for Brazilians living abroad. There are programmes featuring stories of the community and important facts and clues of the immigrant lifestyle.
Leading up to the parade you can enjoy some of the most popular Brazilian soap operas, news, comedy shows, sports, talk shows and very varied children’s programming.

TV Globo International is an à la carte premium channel that is specially priced at $72.45 per month. All DirecTV customers can tune in to Channel 776 to enjoy this special free preview, during Rio Carnival from tomorrow until March 5.
