It was standing room only at Raw Star Café on Washington Avenue, Brooklyn, New York, when New York based Sisters in Harmony launched it's Praise project on February 26.The Praise poster, aimed at immortalising the majesty of femininity of women of all colours, shapes, and sizes the world over, was one of an array of aesthetic posters produced by the non-profit organisation .With a mission to "unite women of all backgrounds and cultures in our community to guide and support the next generation of young women through mentoring, education and teaching them to live with a purpose and work towards a common goal by harmonising their talents, skills and abilities..." the non-profit organisation is all about seeing the return of positive images of women in communities.
The group was founded in 2009, and boasts more than 300 members from T&T and across the Caribbean, the United States, St Lucia, Liberia, and the United Kingdom. And, according to founder and president, Edmund "Umoja" Herman, more than 60 per cent of the posters feature Caribbean women.Raw Star Cafe, Trinidadian born Mawule Jo Simon played host to a standing room only crowd. Spiritual advisor, Grand Master Kham opened the event by invoking the blessings of the ancestors via libation.Also in attendance was Tulani Kinard of Sweet Honey in the Rock fame, who was also featured on the Praise poster.
