The many moods of Roy Cape

Friday, April 15, 2011
Japanese Hideyo Morimoto has fun playing an African drum in the Siparia Rhythm Posse, at last year’s Tribute to Mothers event, at the Salybia Nature Resort and Spa.

Being in Guyana for a few days prevented me from doing my usual kind of Friday column. But, on my return home, I was presented with two sensational events to publicise. The month of May is regarded by most countries internationally as the month where mothers are recognised and several events are hosted throughout this month to celebrate our mothers. On Saturday, May 21, in their second annual Tribute to Mothers event, Roy Cape All Stars presents—The Many Moods of Roy Cape—at the Salybia Nature Resort and Spa, Toco Main Road. On the billing are the All Stars’ Blaxx, Rita Jones and Olatungi; Dil-e-Nadan, featuring Raymond Ramnarine; T&TEC Gayatones, featuring Oscar B and Avinash Maharaj; plus Benjai, Black Stalin, Rikki Jai and a number of guest artistes, in this premium all-inclusive event from 4 pm to  midnight.

This annual fund-raiser continues to display the talents of Roy Cape for his incredible work over the last 50 years and beyond in the development, promotion and maintenance of Soca music, and to the establishment of The Roy Cape Musical Benevolent Fund to assist in the development of young musicians and Soca artistes in the local fraternity. I know you are interested in attending, so call 684-0557, 684-9147, 397-4508 or 691-3210 for bookings. Also ask about the weekend package special at the Resort.

Meanwhile, back on the ranch

Picture a venue hidden away in more than 100 acres of lush greenery. Bask in the open air atmosphere under the moonlight. Picture the superstars of the Android Riddim Live on one big stage for one night only. Picture the outdoor swimming pool, next to the premium drinks bar and stage. Picture 300 women in swimwear, moving to the beat of the hottest dancehall riddim in the Caribbean right now. That’s right…it’s the Android Riddim Video release party, featuring performances from the biggest names in dancehall, at the Ranch, La Florissante, La Resource Road, in North East Trinidad, tomorrow evening, from 6 pm. Among the artistes of this genre billed to be featured are Squeezy Rankin, Chin Mischif, King David, Buffy, Synergy Soca Star winner Ras Star, Raskal, Screwz, Kazee, Skully and Nam45 from the GTM, Toronto’s Uzman, Moiika from Los Angeles, B Sugar, Marley Palmer, MaHa, Lady Lava, and Scarz.

Also on stage will be popular disc jockeys like Trevlyn and Die Hard, Immortal Vybz, and Hans and Gonzo. Also making guest appearances are two European jocks, namely DJ D One, representing Jam Masters, and Herbalize-it of The Dutch Champion Sound. The Android Riddim Video will be premiered on a huge 15-foot screen, and it’s your opportunity to see it before the rest of the world. Organisers have assured that there is a huge car park and security for all parked vehicles, and there will be strictly no parking in the road.
