Jeanine is partying like a rock star in Key West Florida. She is there with her boyfriend, BFF, and some other friends. Not only is she there to let loose during spring break, but she's also just had her 21st birthday. After a night of heavy drinking, Jeanine passes out, only to wake to find her boyfriend and BFF getting it on in the bathroom. In the ultimate act of revenge, she takes his beloved Camaro out for a spin. A joy ride that ends with horrific results. That is, until a chance encounter with police officer, Peter, changes her life forever.
Nina is a new attorney on the rise. Her history is clouded, and she fudged her resume to get a job as a paralegal. Her employer was so impressed with her work that they paid for her law degree. After ten years of night school and busting her butt, and raising her 16-year-old-daughter on her own, she's in a good place in her life. She's happy. Peter seems to be the ultimate cop. He's dedicated to his job, has worked on task-forces, done undercover work, and appears to be fast-tracked for even bigger and better things. Maybe he'll even be Chief of Police one day. But there is a dark side to Peter, something he's hiding. And the perfect life he's created with his new wife quickly vanishes when she becomes the latest victim of the Jump Killer, a serial killer terrorising the women of South Florida.
It is now days before the execution of Justin Harris, the man convicted of one murder and presumed to be the notorious Jump Killer. Nina is assigned to work with an innocence-type project, and each person on the team is assigned a case. However, when a friend gets a case that hits a little to close to home, Nina decides, after a lot of soul-searching, to swap cases with her. Nina is now working the Jump Killer case. She knows that the man is innocent. He is most definitely not the Jump Killer. Now she just needs to prove it, and she must return to South Florida, a place filled with unpleasant memories and a secret she'd prefer not be exposed. Everything she has worked so hard for can be taken away from her in an instant. Regardless of the damage it may do to her personal life, her conscience will not allow her to let an innocent man die.
Nina meets up with Charles Baylor, the attorney representing Justin Harris, convicted Jump Killer. Charlie doesn't want any help from Nina, convinced he can keep his client alive all on his own. Nina isn't so sure, and she won't give up pestering him until he gives in and agrees to let her help him. And the more Nina points out little things that don't add up to Charlie, the more he really believes in his clients' innocence.
With just a few days left until the execution, and after hitting brick wall after brick wall, Charlie and Nina know that there is someone else out there that is just as determined as they are to make this execution happen as they are to stopping it. Can they prevent the execution of an innocent man, or will the Jump Killer claim one more victim? As with all Patterson books, the chapters are short, the pace is fast.
