A Curfew Calypso Monarch Competition is to be held in San Fernando on Sunday, in observance of Calypso History Month-October. Chairman of the Trinbago Unified Calypso Organisation (TUCO) South/Central Zone, Ras Kommanda, said it was the third year the organisation was hosting the competition. However, he said, it had chosen to give this year's event a curfew twist, in light of the state of emergency and the 11 pm to 4 am curfew. He said the show would start at 4 pm at the San Fernando City Auditorium and is expected to end promptly at 8 pm. "So people have enough time to come enjoy the show and reach home before the curfew goes into effect," Kommanda said.
Nine finalists and one reserve would compete for cash prizes. First place winner will receive $30,000. Prizes of $15,000, $10,000 and $7,000 will be awarded to the second, third and fourth place winners respectively. Contestants placing fifth to ninth will each receive $5,000. The contestants are Victoria Cooper, Sekon Alves, Rosemary Mitchell, Tameika Darius, Victor Mc Donald, Osei Ato, Joanne Foster, Hezekiah Joseph and Selvon Noel. Fritz Taylor is the reserve. Kommanda said each contestant would perform two songs. He also noted that the same specialist system of judging, as obtained during the National Calypso Monarch Competition, will be applied in competition, where judges will adjudicate on lyrics, music and presentation.
