The Coco Dance Festival celebrates its third year as the only annual contemporary dance festival in the English-speaking Caribbean. This year the Contemporary Choreographers' Collective (COCO) has titled it's season, Projections. The production will be staged at the Little Carib Theatre in Woodbrook on November 10-13, at 7 pm.
As co-founder of the Festival, Sonja Dumas explains, "We're looking at the concept of projections in a number of ways; in addition to the multi-media video projection component for some pieces, we want to celebrate new strides in choreographic work. It's a way of projecting ourselves on to the future of dance."
The festival began as the intention on the part of four choreographers, Dave Williams, Dumas, Nancy Herrera and Nicole Wesley, to create a cooperative platform for their work and the work of other choreographers working in contemporary, experimental and post-modern styles.
Last week the Coco committee announced the names of the choreographers who had been selected from submissions by choreographers. In addition to the works of the Coco four or their companies, works by Heather Henderson Gordon, Anika Marcelle, Bridgette Wilson and visual/performance artist Michelle Isava will be featured. The special guest artiste is contemporary choreographer Neila Ebanks from Jamaica.
In keeping with its mission of offering a platform for new ideas and fresh thinking, Coco also selected and invited notable submissions by students pursuing dance degrees at The University of the West Indies and The University of Trinidad and Tobago.
Tickets cost $100 and are available from participating choreographers and at the Little Carib Theatre box office during the week of the show. Discounts are available at each show for tertiary-level students with valid identification. For further information visit Coco Dance Festival on Facebook.
