"Foreign waters wash away too much native soil." So says Kahuna, an old Hawaiian man of mystical religious powers, in disapproval of the marriage of Hawaiian Princess Emmaloa to the Chinese man Chun. As the black iwa bird circles 13 times overhead, Kahuna explains that there will be 13 Daughters but none will marry until there are blossoms on the trees. Twenty-six years later Emmy and Chun do indeed have 13 daughters but Chinese custom demands that the oldest daughter must marry first. "Thirteen unmarried daughters? I'd be the laughing stock of Chinatown..but Chun has a plan. Start with a desire, fabricate a trap and spring it shut!"
Talented students of Naparima Girls' High School and their male counterparts from neighbouring schools are in rehearsal for the December 1 premiere of the musical 13 Daughters. The play is being staged at the Naparima Bowl, San Fernando, until December 3. The musical is part of the celebrations of the school's Centenary Celebrations, and a number of the school's prominent alumni are expected to attend.
