It was a celebration and explosion of dance when 30 groups came together to participate in Dance Plethora, at the Creative Arts Centre, San Fernando on November 19.Twenty-nine dance groups from the south and the Malick Performers from the north, thrilled the packed audience with their masterful movement, incorporating dance and drama at the first part of this trilogy of artistic creativity titled Bodow.
Two other shows, Echoes in the Wind, a musical talent competition was scheduled for November 25, while Fabula, an evening of dramatic presentations will be held on November 30 as part of the San Fernando Arts Council 41st Annual Festival of Arts and Culture (Senior Festival).
Dance Plethora, which was free to the public, captivated the close to 350 people who attended with their heel and toe, jazz, folk and classical Indian, hip hop and all different genres of dance.One of the dance leaders, Lucy Regis of Nation Folkness Theatre Company Naradnost, explained that Dance Plethora is an effort to bring back dance to south Trinidad.
She said a challenge was extended to the participating groups to create a full length dance production, between now and December 2012, to be held at the Creative Arts Centre, free of rental charge."We want to bring back that vibe to San Fernando, the mother of arts and culture, to bring the society back together," Regis said.
"Bodow connotes a kind of explosion, extravagance, a majestic realm."She said now that the use of Naparima Bowl for arts and culture is under threat, "we want to bring arts back to life in San Fernando as a non medical form of healing."
