Lovers of Kaiso music were treated to a great free show on February 16 when the Couva Carnival Committee showcased the Tuco South Central tent at the Couva Car Park. The evening opened with a performance by Shy entitled Rescue. Shy sang about the social problems facing families in T&T, and asked the burning question, “Who is to take responsibility,” for the mayhem in the country?

Kaiso Nobbie then took the stage to sing Helpful Fathers. His song knocked absentee fathers who end up in jail and the group of men who pose as “helpful fathers” and exploit women. Nikko, the granddaddy of the tent, dished out Come On Down. His offering jammed house to house propagators of religious salvation. Count Robin gave an excellent performance of Dem Police, a song that knocked the weakness of the police service and policemen. Victoria Cooper got calls for an encore with her performance of PP Cuff You. This offering slapped supporters of the PP Government, who were blanked or sidelined after the present government got into power.

Hezekiah Joseph sang It is Alleged, a song about T&T Crime Watch boss, Ian Alleyne. In her song, The Cause, Young Rose addressed social problems and the role of absentee fathers and men who have blatant disregard for morals. To close the first half, calyposonian Cyclops did not fall short as he sang a humorous hit about his dream to ride a horse. The Couva Carnival Committee’s celebrates its 20th anniversary this year with five days of celebrations.
