The Environmental Management Authority's Youth Ambassadors (YAs) hosted the first eco concert in T&T entitled OMG!-Orient My Generation on February 4 at Queen's Hall in Port-of-Spain. President of the EMA YAs, Rondelle Keller opened the show and also offered the welcoming remarks. Following the national anthem, special guest host and entertainer SuperJigga TC took to the stage to open the night's performances. Judgement Reach was the first dramatic performance of the evening, which spoke to the chronic issue of noise in T&T. The show was fluid as Environmental Report, another dramatic piece followed. Tenique Beckles, winner of the Eco-Song 2011 Secondary Schools competition, then performed her winning number, Once, Twice & Trees. Douen Dumb Party was up next, followed by the first produced short film by the YAs entitled Halfway Green. Alex the Mako and Suzai's interaction had the crowd begging for more, as this dramatic piece enveloped several environmental messages promoting green lifestyles.
Some of the messages included: utilising reusable cups, recycling, walking with reusable bags and renewable energy. The talented YAs artwork, which appears in the EMA's 2012 calendar, was also displayed as a video presentation that was created by some of the ambassadors. Nehemiah Edwards and Alexander Johnson created the video and Alex Harripersad produced the background music. Monster's Surfer's Club, a dramatic song and dance rendition, shared an environmental message about the effects of pollution on the ocean and the importance of caring for the biodiversity that exists there. Ocean Robber, River Jab Jab and the Swamp Pierrot also shared their laments with the audience that human activities were slowly depleting their resources in Band of the Year. Illegal hunting was another message addressed by the YA. Do So Doh Like So incorporated local folklore such as Papa Bois, La Diablesse and Harry de Hunter, whom some would say was the man of the show, came out in a dramatic presentation to the song Huntin by Blaxx. Harry had the crowd cheering and laughing as he sang his eco version of Kees' Wotless, Careless.
The show went on and peaked the audience's interest from start to finish as Anthony Batson, winner in the 2011 Eco-Song Competition sang his original chutney rendition, Show love for your country. His spectacular East Indian twang left the audience in amazement and loud cheers followed his performance. YA Winsie-Ann Cuffie, also sang her self-composed item, Green it up, which was also well received by the crowd. The show closed on a high as entertainer SuperJigga TC belted out a couple of his popular tunes for Carnival 2012, much to the delight of the audience. EMA's managing director/CEO, Dr Joth Singh, was also quite proud of the youth for their hard work and dedication to this project. "These youth ambassadors are well on their way to becoming future environmental leaders. Changing behaviour starts with early education and involvement, and our educational programmes allow for greater involvement and increased awareness among the youth in Trinidad and Tobago. "The EMA invests a lot of resources in youth training and development. We are now seeing the rewards of this investment, so creatively demonstrated at this concert," he said.
