Two men drove off with prizes of a Ford Fiesta and a Nissan March, a mere two weeks after the staging of the first National Carnival Chutney Soca Monarch Competition. One was the winner of the competition, the other a door prize winner. On March 4, the committee, under Sun Splash Promotion and Prudent Enterprises held its prize giving function at the Space La Nouba Night Club in La Romaine.
Winner of the first edition of the show held at Skinner Park on February 20, Rick Ramoutar, accompanied by his wife Vanessa, announced that he will be back next year to defend his title. Saying it was the first major competition that he had won, the Ah Wish I was Single singer was in high praise for the competition's committee for bringing chutney soca back to San Fernando.
Ramoutar was all smiles as he drove off to his Couva home in his new Ford Fiesta. Kaysho Gopaul, a Chaguanas native now resident in Canada won the door prize of the Nissan March. Among those attending were Chris Garcia, who place second with his composition Sundar, Drupatee Ramgoonai, Leon Coldero and Neeshan Prabhoo. Former San Fernando Mayor Ian Atherly dubbed the event a success, saying it was one of the shortest time in which artistes were able to receive their prizes after a competition. He lauded the effort made by the committee, as the show was organised in just two weeks and announced that next year's competition would be bigger.
