Pictures from Paradise: A Survey of Contemporary Caribbean Photography was launched on April 26 at Medulla Art Gallery in Woodbrook by Robert and Christopher Publishers. Part of the NGC Bocas Lit Festival, the multi-media event showcased photographic illustrations from artists from Jamaica, Trinidad, and other English-speaking Caribbean islands. The focus of Pictures from Paradise is to capture and depict images that are not easily seen or often ignored from a social, physical, political and landscape perspective within the English-speaking Caribbean.
Pictures from Paradise showcased an essay by O'Neil Lawrence, assistant curator of the National Gallery of Jamaica, as well as works from artists such as Gerard Gaskin, Abigail Hadeed, Alex Smailes, Rodell Warner, Ewan Atkinson, Marvin Bartley, Terry Boddie, Holly Bynoe, James Cooper, Renee Cox, Gerard Hanson, Marlon James, Roshini Kempadoo, Ebony Patterson, Radcliffe Roye and Stacey Tyrell. The book was edited by Melanie Archer and Mariel Brown.
