Come May 9, a most unique calypso concert, Who's Going to Guard the Guards, will be staged at De Nu Pub in Woodbrook. Artistes on the playbill are: 2012 National Calypso Monarch Duane O'Connor; past monarchs Kenny J, Johnny King; Bodyguard; Stinger and Bunny B; and acclaimed horn player Pedro "Timmy" Lezama. So, what makes this production so unique and special? The entire cast comprises police officers. O'Connor, also the reigning Tuco North Zone monarch, sang the Larry Harewood-penned classic on popular TV show host Ian Alleyne, to cop calypso's most prestigious and coveted titles this year. He is also a Young Kings Monarch. Had he been a cricketer, Kenny J would be deemed an allrounder. This veteran has a large cadre of fans, especially among women.
Johnnie King has been a household name for calypso lovers for well over two decades. Among this Tobago bard's numerous favourite hits are the immortal Nature's Plan, Appreciation and Wet Mih Down. A graduate of the Police Service Calypso Monarch competition, Bodyguard, graduated to the big times with a bang. One of his much-loved hits is the creative Market Cussout. The pride of Sangre Grande, Stinger is regarded by peers and fans alike as "a true true kaisonian." Through the years he has regaled us with big tunes, like Voices from the Van and the hilarious Take Two Panadol.
Bunny B comes from a calypso family and is the brother of Trinidad Rio and The Mechanic. When it comes to wit and consistently coming up with original themes, very few can contest Bunny. In fact, this Kaiso House singer made it to this year's national monarch semifinal with a craftily composed ditty named Lightning. Considered as one of the best saxophonists in the land, Lezama is easily compared to world renowned horn men like Kenny G and Trinidad's own Etienne Charlesm. Showtime is promptly at 8.30 pm. De Nu Pub is also toasting mothers on May 13 with a special Mother's Day concert and brunch from 11 am.
