Nikki Crosby

 

Nikki Crosby, BA in marketing and third year BSc psychology student, has been part of the artistic and cultural landscape for many years. Crosby is a famous daughter of the St James soil. The first female stand-up comedienne in the Caribbean, she has represented T&T the world over, including The Apollo, New York, The Montreal Comedy Festival and various comedy festivals. In 2008, she formed the first all-female theatre production company, Ha Ha Ha Productions, along with Penelope Spencer and the late Mairoon Ali. She is a multiple Cacique Award winner for her work in theatre: Best Actress, Best Production, Original Writing and Best Producer. Since its inception, Ha Ha Ha Productions has produced many successful plays, most recently, Hott Mouth Granny. In the field of radio she hosted the Morning Show with Paul and Nikki on 96.1 WEFM then moved over to 107.7 FM. Now she is the host on Caribbean Super Station, a radio show that aires live weekday mornings in Barbados, St Lucia, Grenada, Dominica, Antigua and Barbuda, St Kitts and Nevis, Grenada, The British Virgin Islands and Trinidad and Tobago. Crosby is also the host of the television show Let's Talk. Her first appearance on television was with the Nikki on the Promenade show, a Carnival show highlighting the best of Trinidad and Tobago’s Carnival.
Her much-anticipated “Nikkiland” event, an annual Carnival show for children, celebrated its seventh year in 2012 . 
 
Q: Where were you born and where did you grow up?
A: St James.
 
At what schools/institutions did you receive your education?
Providence High School, University of Windsor, and I am currently pursuing a BSc in psychology at Costaatt.
 
Who were the people who have influenced you  most (other than your parents)?
My grandparents.
 
How do you best describe the type of work you do?
Entertainer. I am an all-round entertainer.
 
Your favourite comedian of all time?
Richard Pryor.
 
Being in the public eye, what would you like people to know about you that they probably don’t know or are probably misinformed about?
I don’t like alcohol. People always feel comedians have to be high to talk so much stupidness (big laugh).
 
The one place you would like to visit and why?
China. Would love to see where my great grandparents came from.
 
Your favourite meal or dish/food?
Chinee Food! (another big laugh).
 
What is your greatest accomplishment?
I recently received the Paul Harris Award from Rotary Club (Princes Town) for the “give back” work that I do.
 
What is your most cherished possession?
My dogs. Bob and Marley.
 
If you could dine with anyone in history, who would that be and what dinner conversation would you have with that person?
President Obama. Would love to get in his head.
 
What advice would you give to the young people of Trinidad and Tobago?
Reach for the stars. The only person that can keep you back is yourself.
 
If you could hire any singer or band to perform in your living room, who would you pick?
Whitney Houston, but I guess it’s a little late for that.
 
What was the most difficult decision you ever had to make?
Leaving Trinidad to go to Canada to study.
 
What would you say is your greatest virtue?
I see the good in everyone.
 
What daily motto do you live by?
Live each day like it is your last, ’cause one day it will be.
 
How/where do you see yourself in ten years?
Running my daycare centre, Nikkiland Nurseries.
 
What are your most prized possessions: One tangible, one intangible?
My Hilux and my husband’s love.
 
Of all your accolades, prizes and awards which do you rate as extremely special?
My Lifetime Achievement award from the Caribbean Community of Howard University.
 
What advice would you give to the country’s leaders to create a better society?
Concentrate on the young people of our country. Many people ignore that generation but they are our future.
 
Do you pattern your work after any other person or persons?
When I first started out, my style was very much like Whoopi Goldberg as I loved her work, but over time I just became me.
 
What is/are the defining (“aha”) moment/s in your life so far?
Getting married.
 
Favourite calypso/soca song of all time?
Anything by David Rudder.
 
Describe yourself in one word?
Funny.
 
What is an interesting facet of your personality that most people do not know about you?
I am very spiritual.
 
What is the best compliment you have ever received?
That I have a big heart.
