With his soothing voice and compelling lyrics Anthony Gonzales, also known as The Psalmist Mekaiel, is making a name for himself in the local music industry. The newcomer is turning his negative experiences into positive lyrics that he says anyone can relate to. Two of his new singles entitled Never Leave U and Deep in My Heart is already receiving airplay. Gonzales is from a musical family and made his first appearance under the guidance of his father, Anthony Gonzales senior, at a family concert at age four. Since then the 18-year-old has performed at many school competitions as a student of the Southern Academy of SDA. He is a member of the Cocoyea SDA choir.
"I've done this for so long that honestly at a point, I thought I would do it just as a hobby. But the music is so deep within that my hands start to fidget a lot and I realise that this is what I really love doing it. I want to be that artiste who delivers inspirational messages to the youths and to the older folks." Gonzales is expected to release his debut album, Smile, in October. Working with BeatOven productions and Alexander HRS to record a collaboration with Patternson Skerritt, Gonzales is hoping to get positive feedback from the album. The artiste has placed his life experiences into writing and has drawn inspiration from them. The track Never Leave U, co-written by Ralph Gittens, speaks of the murder of two of his uncles and a serious accident involving his mother and sister.
The lyrics of Deep in My Heart tells of a heart condition from which the artiste suffers. He believes that these experiences have driven him to perfecting his craft and getting his message to the world. The Golconda resident has acknowledged the success of soca in the local music industry, but insists he is a gospel singer and wants to produce music that people can relate to. "Soca really can't tell the stories I want to tell in terms of life experiences. I like people to think and understand what I went through and know that somebody out in the crowd will be going through the same thing. I chose gospel. "This is what I do fulltime, defying all odds and going strong with it every day. This is my career choice. This is my job right now."
